autumn outreach 2011
Project Peace
National Waterfront Museum, Swansea
October 2011
In October 2011 the Waterfront Museum in Swansea curated a weekend festival in support of Black History Month. Part of the festival included a visit from Jean-Robert Cadet, a truly inspirational man who was brought up in child slavery in Haiti, and has fought for the rights of children ever since.
Viv Buckley (Artistic Director wgytc) was asked to devise a 20 minute piece of drama based on his book Restavec, and could think of no more an appropriate group, than the excellent young people who apply to wgytc OUTREACH to do this with.
To be asked to be part of the festival was truly humbling, and to be given the opportunity to work alongside Jean-Robert; was an opportunity not to be missed. 22 students met at Bishop Gore comprehensive school for 4 intensive rehearsals, and in that time wrote, created and shaped an original piece of work. The piece was very well received and the students have been invited to recreate the work in 2012 at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.
