developing the company
Our aim:
- To access as many young people as possible through workshops and residential courses.
- To promote the services of wgytc to drama/production practitioners in schools and colleges.
- To celebrate the first class provision Swansea and Neath Port Talbot provide.
Following the success of Billy Elliot Youth Theatre in 2010, wgytc has decided to broaden it’s outreach work to include a host of initiatives designed to encourage as many students and teachers from Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, as possible, to access the Company.
Projects include:
- The development of our website to include easy access for drama teachers and arts professionals and accessible information for students on how to become part of the Company;
- An inset for teachers to promote the Company and to provide useful tools to take back to the classroom;
- Broadening schools knowledge of the wider curriculum benefits to schools and individuals including improved literacy and interpersonal skills;
- Encouraging drama specialists to visit the Company in residence to observe practice and widen participation;
- An evening of thanks, hosted by Patron, Michael Sheen for the funders of wgytc;
- Participation a wide variety of productions, including the National Theatre Wales production, The Passion
Much of the outreach work has been encouraged by our Patron, Michael Sheen who sees his time at wgytc as integral to his incredible accomplishments as an actor. On a recent visit to the Company in residence, Michael was delighted to see that the traditions and skills which saw him on his way to international success as a performer, were still being observed in the rehearsal room. Michael is our patron, a testament to the high regard in which the work and worth of the Company is viewed by those who have been part of it. When asked what effect Youth Theatre had had on him as a 14 year old boy, Michael simply replied “it changed my life”.
